How to Play Fantasy Football
Do you want to increase the excitement of the upcoming football season? Maybe it’s time you joined a fantasy football league. Fantasy football has now become the most wildly popular fantasy sport and you can easily join one of thousands of leagues online. Before you begin, you’ll want to know the basics of building your fantasy football team.
The first thing you’ll do when you join a fantasy football league is prepare for your league draft. The draft is an online or live event where you pick and choose players at each position. A typical fantasy football team consists of the following starting positions: One quarterback, two running backs, three wide receivers, one tight end, one kicker and a team defense. Of course every position will have back up players that will be on your roster, but not earning points. Only the starters earn points.
Most scoring systems vary, but typically points are awarded for touchdowns, field goals, extra points, receiving yards, passing yards, two point conversions, sacks and interceptions. A good indicator of how often a team or player will score would be to look at their scoring total from previous seasons. The player need not be on a winning team to put up big fantasy numbers, in many cases players on losing teams score some of the most points.
To prepare for draft day you’ll want to have a list of all the players ranked in order of best to worst. Many websites and magazines will give you what they call “cheat sheets” – which rank the players in the order they suggest. Feel free to stray from this list and make your own decisions. Keep an eye on players with injury history or off the field problems, you may want to avoid players with these types of problems.
Once you draft your team, you will be required to put in a starting line-up. Choose your best players and the ones that you think will put up the most points. If you are wavering between two players and you are unsure of which one to start, choose the one who has the better “match up”. In other words if Player A is a wide receiver and he is facing the 28th ranked passing defense and Player B is also a wide receiver and he is facing the 3rd ranked passing defense – you’ll obviously want to start player A.
The nice part about fantasy football is that there are only 13 weeks of competition. Basketball and baseball just have too many games to keep track of a fantasy roster for most people who work full time jobs. Another good thing about fantasy football is that it makes every game interesting. Let’s say you’re a Cowboys fans and they aren’t playing until Monday night. Typically this might cause you to not even watch football on Sunday. But if you’re playing fantasy football, you can watch almost any game that has one of your fantasy players in it and root for him to score!
If you’re playing online, it’s really fun to go to the “live scoring” link on your fantasy football website and actually watch your fantasy team compete with scoring updates coming minute by minute. Many leagues run a head to head system where your fantasy team plays another specific fantasy team in your league each week. When watching football, you can not only root for your players – but you can root against your opponents players.
After playing fantasy football for a few years, you’ll be surprised at the football knowledge you’ve obtained. Now that you are researching players each year, you might find yourself at a party discussing some obscure tight end who you think will be this years “sleeper”. (sleeper is a term used to describe a player that most people have never heard of yet winds up being one of the best at his position during the season.)
Overall, playing fantasy football not only increases your knowledge of the came but it makes watching football a lot more exciting. Nowadays you can even find leagues online that require an entry fee, but also pay winnings to the top three or four teams in the league. Fantasy football has become so big that there are leagues in Las Vegas and New York with $1,000 to $2,000 entry fees and along with those huge fees there are huge payouts to the winners. So whether you’re playing for prizes or for the fun – fire up your computer, find yourself a fantasy football league and get ready for game day!
